Eddie Izzard Mandela Marathons

In February of 2016, British comedian Eddie Izzard embarked on an attempt to run 27 marathons in 27 days through South Africa, as a salute to Nelson Mandela who spent 27 years of his life in prison in his fight against Apartheid. It's an amazing effort and Eddie has raised something in the region of 4million GBP with his marathon running. Letsrun.com forum users might complain that he doesn't run the whole thing, there's a lot of walking, but taking all factors into consideration, especially the heat, it's still an incredible and uplifting story of human endurance and willpower. I figure that if Eddie can run consecutive marathons in 100 degrees plus, I can get through a 4 mile recovery run on the treadmill.

Highly recommended for anyone doing stair-stepper or incline hiking training on a treadmill. Would also be great for rehabbing from injury or for something slightly different to watch while aerobic base training inside.

The Barkley Marathons

Fantastic feature-length documentary about a unique trail running ultra race. Equal parts hilarity (part of the entry fee one year was a pair of socks) and serious feats of extreme endurance, it's mesmerizing viewing. Watched from the comfort of a treadmill you'll be grateful that you aren't climbing up the "Rat Jaw" section of the race where runners legs are lacerated by saw briars. Only a handful of athletes have ever completed the 100 mile, 5 lap race. Sure to make your workout feel achievable!

Two Eight Two: The Munros in 98 Days

Highly recommended for a treadmill run, stair-stepper or elliptical, this is a beautiful self-produced documentary of an epic adventure: trying to hike all 282 of Scotland's "Munros" (mountain peaks above 3,000') in one summer. Kevin Woods does a really impressive job hiking, filming, editing and telling his story. The physical effort and stunning scenery aside, this film is notable for the honest way he documents the mental ups and downs he goes through. Anyone who has ever set themselves a big challenge, be it a marathon, a summit attempt, a PB goal, can identify with what he goes through. Spoiler alert, it is uplifting not depressing.
